Toxins? How Did They Get in my Skincare Products?

We all have the right to buy personal care products without the fear of exposing our families to cancer-causing chemicals.

Women use an average of 12 personal care products per day, exposing themselves to 168 unique chemical ingredients — not counting the dozens of often toxic yet undisclosed chemicals in fragrance. (That’s right companies are not required by law to tell you about them!)  Men are using approximately 8 products daily. Just to think that many of the shampoos we have used for years contain formaldehyde and dioxane, known carcinogens, really is outrageous. Unsafe exposures from personal care products add to our daily dose of hazardous chemicals from air, water, food and other consumer products as well. These endocrine disrupters are known to cause:

  • neurodevelopment disorders
  • lung tumors
  • liver and kidney tumors
  • genital abnormalities
  • lowered sperm counts
  • infertility
  • cancer

In Europe, 1,200 chemicals have been banned, while the U.S. has banned only 10. We are spreading chemical cocktails on one of the largest detox organs of our body, our skin. We are breathing them in as well. What should be a deep breath of clean, fresh air, often becomes a toxic soup which is absorbed straight from our lungs into our blood supply. We are thereby getting a healthy dose of toxins directly into our body. Have you every walked into a public restroom and been blasted by the “artificial fragrance” in the room? Those toxins are surging through our blood stream being deposited in our organs, and stored in our fat cells. Non alcoholic fatty liver disease is now becoming an epidemic in our country, and the only way for it to stop is for the consumer to get the knowledge and ACT on it. As many of you have heard, the visceral fat in and around our internal organs and mid section can cause a serious malfunction or inability for that organ not to work efficiently.

There are some 80,000 chemicals used in this country and only 200 have been tested for safety! At least 300 chemicals have been found in the umbilical cord of newborn babies. While we should be protecting these “little ones”, we have been at a loss because we have not had the knowledge to do so. A fraction of the products that are used daily are: baby wipes, shampoo, lotion, perfume, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, shaving cream, after shave, mouthwash and makeup. These are the toxins found in some of these products:

  • perfume – diethyl phthalate – causes allergies, hormone disruption and dermatitis
  • skin lightening creams – mercury – can you believe that!
  • nail polish – tolulene, phthalates – associated with chronic headaches, cancer
  • toothpaste, antibacterial soaps, deodorant – triclosan – thyroid and hormone disrupter
  • sunscreens, shaving cream, foundations – 1,3butadiene – causes mammary tumors
  • cosmetics, shampoos – naphthalene – known breast cancer risk
  • sunscreens, foundation, lipstick, whitening toothpaste – LEAD, need I say more!
